Kate's notes: Many thanks to Bill Gilliland for sharing these family photos here at Gilliland Trails.
Bill's great-grandfather Peter Gilliland, born July 1853 to Nathan M. Gilliland and Lydia Graham of Jackson County, Ohio, is another descendant of Nathan Gilliland of Augusta County, Virginia. On March 31st, 1875, Peter married Isabell "Belle" Brunton, daughter of William W. and Priscilla Masters. From that union was born Bill's grandfather William Gilliland, who married Alma Howe of Jackson. William ran the country store at Mabees Corner in Hamilton Township, home to many of the earliest Gilliland families in Jackson County.
These photos are of my great-grandparents Peter and Belle, my grandparents Bill and Alma, a photo of my grandpa Bill with his bakery wagon and the store with my grandpa in front (taken sometime in the 40's).
My grandpa delivered bakery stuff door to door around the turn of the century in Jackson and that is how he met my grandma Alma (Howe). They were married in 1901 and lived in the home he built on 139 until he died in 1952. My great-grandparents lived just down the road (south) and after my great-grandmother died in 1932, my parents moved into their place. I and my brother and two sisters were all born in the house. We moved from there in 1942 when my Dad got a job at Wright Patterson air base. I have lived in the Dayton area ever since. I remember quite well the store and how the locals would gather on Saturday evening to swap stories and news. We made frequent trips "back home" in Dad's 1936 Chevy down Rt. 35. He passed away in 1997 at age 89. He loved to tell stories about those early years in Jackson. My mother is still living (94) and also recalls stories of the days in Jackson County.
