Sheilah Bates' Gilliland Family Album
Sheila writes: My Gilliland line can be traced via my great-grandmother Jessie Maude Gilliland, who became the bride of Jesse Brown. Jessie Maude was born in 1885 in Iconium, Iowa and died in 1975 in Hillsdale, Kansas.
Her father was Perry Lafayette Gilliland, born 1845 in Wapello, Iowa, died in 1933 in Hillsdale, Kansas. His father was Robert Jackson Gilliland, born 1818, died unknown, married Mary Jane Chapman in 1844 in Gallia, Ohio. Then his father was Samuel T. Gilliland, born 1792 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. His wife was Caty Atkinson (Catharine Adkeson). Back to Robert Jackson Gilliland and wife Mary Jane Chapman. They moved to Iowa between 1844 & 1850 per Iowa Census.
Jessie Brown's second child was Harold. She lost several children in infancy, possibly some to typhoid; below is a list of the children in order:

- Infant Brown b 1909 d 1909
- Infant Brown b 1911 d 1911
- Pauline Fay Brown b 1914 d 1993
- Paul Irvin Brown b 1917 d 1977 (my grandfather)

My great grandmother Jessie Maude Gilliland Brown and her son Harold. This picture was taken a few weeks before Harold's death. He lived from 1907-1908, so the date of 1902 written later on the photo is incorrect.
