Warren Gilliland and Family

This is a photographic portrait of the Warren and Catherine (Reed) Gilliland family of Jackson County, Ohio, circa 1903.
Front Row L-R: Elmer, Verna, Orpha, Carl
Middle Row L-R: Lucy, Clara Ethel, Wildia
Back Row L-R: Dave, Warren, Catherine (Reed), Jesse.

Warren Gilliland (1854-1928) was the father of Robert Preston's grandmother Lucy Gilliland Johnson, the adorable and shy little girl in the middle of the photo. Carl, the boy seated at the far right of the photo, is the grandfather of Roger Gilliland(<Warren<Carl<Warren Sr.) whose farm at Mabee's Corner was highlighted in an article I penned about my Sept. 2007 trip to Ohio.

Robert, like Roger and me, comes from Nathan Gilliland's line via George and Julina Canter Gilliland. Robert and Roger descend from George and Julina's son Warren Sr., whereas my line can be traced to another son, Washington, who was Warren Sr.'s elder brother. Then there's my own uncle Warren Gilliland (1913-1985) who was probably named after a Warren in this family tree!

Catherine E. (Reed) Gilliland (1858-1920) was the daughter of John and Caroline (Motz) Reed, German immigrants. John and Caroline are buried at St Johns Cemetery on Riegel Ridge Rd (West off Rt 139) in the northwest section of Hamilton Township, Jackson County. Following the death of Catherine, Lucy took care of her father Warren and also worked the farm. She remained close to her sisters and to brother Carl (Roger's grandfather) throughout his life.

One thing that struck me about this particular photo is Warren's resemblance to Capt. Coleman Gillilan, another descendant of Nathan Gilliland via his son Jesse. And the both of them bear a striking resemblance to some men from an entirely different Gilliland family, that of Dawn Gilliland Bright, whose family photo album is also in our library. Her Gilliland family supposedly bears no relation to Nathan's, but the resemblance is -- at least to me -- rather striking.
