Beaver Union Cemetery

Location: Pike County, Ohio
On Beaver Pike (County Rd 57) just west of the intersection of Beaver Pike and Route 335.

Beaver Union Cemetery is a well-maintained, historic yet active cemetery with sufficient car paths to access the various sections. Still, without some map to indicate the location of specific graves, a lot of the detective work must be done on foot. Fortunately, at the time I was visiting the cemetery a trustee for nearby Stockdale Cemetery spotted me, camera in hand, searching for stones and offered to help, which was much appreciated.

William Gilliland

William Gilliland b. Feb. 21, 1840, d. Oct. 22, 1897

William Gilliland was a son of Samuel Gilliland, Jr., of Jackson County, Ohio, and Elizabeth Ellen Buckley, also of Jackson County. William and wife Mariah (Dever) had a family of four children: Noah D., Watson E., George Edward (also listed as Edward George), and Otto, who died as a toddler. William was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co I of the 172nd Infantry Regiment, Ohio Volunteers.

Mariah C. (Dever) Gilliland, b. Jan. 19, 1841, d. Jun. 30, 1939

Mariah was the daughter of Noah Dever and Emoline (Bean) Dever. She married William Gilliland January 7, 1862 in Jackson Co., Ohio.

In the 1880 census William and Mariah's household included their three sons and Mariah's parents. Noah Dever, as well as his parents, were recorded as born in West Virginia.

Watson Gilliland, Minnie (Westfall) Gilliland, Lulu (Gilliland) Keppler and Philip Keppler

Watson E. Gilliland b. Jan. 6, 1866, d. Jan. 2, 1951. Watson was a son of William and Mariah (Dever) Gilliland and grandson of Samuel Gilliland, Jr., and Elizabeth Ellen Buckley. He married Minnie Westfall on March 31, 1889 in Pike Co., Ohio.

Miranda "Minnie" F. (Westfall) Gilliland b. Aug. 29, 1866, d. March 7, 1955 . Minnie was the daughter of Henry Wesley and Olive (Scurlock) Westfall.

Lulu Evelyn (Gilliland) Keppler b. Aug. 4, 1893, d. June 28, 1946. Lulu was the only daughter of Watson and Minnie (Westfall) Gilliland, and married Phillip "P. K." Keppler.

Philip King Keppler, b. d. 28 Oct. 1964, was a son of Frederick Keppler and Mary Elizabeth Stir.

Noah D. Gilliland b. July 5, 1863, d. June 10, 1944 and wife Rachel Abigail (Allard) Gilliland, b. June 1, 1865, d. Apr. 18, 1913 of heart failure.

Noah was a son of William and Mariah (Dever) Gilliland. He married Rachel Abigail Allard on Jan 10, 1886 in Pike Co., Ohio. Rachel was the daughter of Thomas and Harriet A. (Brown) Allard, the former of English birth.

Henry J. and Hattie F. (Gilliland) Stoll

Henry Stoll, b. Dec. 31, 1886, d. Sept 28, 1971, was born to Jacob and Lena Stoll, German immigrants. The 1900 census for Beaver Twp. records that Jacob and his brother John owned adjoining farms.

Harriet "Hattie" Gilliland Stoll, b. May 9, 1887, d. Mar. 7, 1977, was the daughter of Noah D. and Rachel Abigail (Allard) Gilliland. Henry and Hattie had two children, William A. and Jennie M.

Walter C. and Mary Barbara (Kuntzman) Gilliland

Walter C. Gilliland, b. Oct. 22, 1878, d. Nov. 23, 1961, was a son of Samuel J. and Elizabeth (Lyons) Gilliland. His wife, Mary Barbara, was born in Pike County on July 22, 1889 and died February 10, 1970. The couple had five children: Mildred M., Lovena Hazel, Trans J. (photo of headstone in this report), Oliver Lloyd and Geneva June, who married Delmer Howard Keppler. Delmer passed in 2009; his biography appears in the Beaver Valley Hall of Fame and Beaver Valley History: Howard Keppler


Trans and Bernice Gilliland

Trans and Bernice (Lyons) Gilliland

Trans "John" Gilliland, b. May 24, 1912, d. May 10, 1988, was a son of Walter C. and Mary Barbara (Kuntzman) Gilliland. He first married Bernice Lyons, b. August 7, 1913 to Joseph and Carrie Lyons. Bernice died in 1952; Trans married a second time in 1957 to Gladys Culp.

Trans and Bernice had four children: Mary Lou, Barbara Jean, Walter Lee and Robert Howard.


Robert H. Gilliland

Robert Howard Gilliland, b. March 20, 1950, d. Jan. 2, 1975, was the son of Trans and Bernice (Lyons) Gilliland.
