Kate's notes:
Dennis McIndoo has created an excellent website for the Canyon Hill
Cemetery of Caldwell, Canyon Co., Idaho. The link to Dennis' site, the

Dennis has generously given me permission to post some of the
Gilliland-related tombstone photos to the Gilliland Trails library,
along with his transcription of an obituary for James Milton Gilliland.
(See the "Obituaries" collection.) If you have related materials to
share with Dennis or would like to drop him a line of support for all
his hard work, please visit his website. Volunteers such as Dennis are
doing the vital work needed and enjoyed by genealogists and family
historians everywhere.
Photos of these stones have been added to our library with the
permission of Dennis McIndoo and should not be used or copied for any
other purpose without his permission.

James Milton Gillilan was born in Linn County, Iowa to
Andrew Edmiston Gillilan and Amanda Esther Kee. His line can be traced
from that of Nathan Gilliland of Augusta County, Virginia
(John>Samuel>Nathan>James>William>Andrew>James Milton). To anyone of
this line, the name of Edmiston is sure to be very familiar, as there
were several early marriages between these two families. In this case,
James' grandfather William Gillilan had married Ann Edmiston in
Greenbrier Co., WV. Their marriage bond is among those in the
collection of our library. It was William who took this Gillilan line
to Linn County, Iowa.
On this Gillilan family stone you will find the names of James, his
mother Amanda Esther (Kee), older brother Frank and Frank's wife,
Edith.

This footstone is a bit of a mystery. Not only is Gililand a rarer version of the
family surname, there are no other Gililands buried at this cemetery.
James Milton's second wife was named Nellie so at first I suspected
this Nellie may have been a daughter whose name had been misspelled on
the marker, but in 1900 -- twelve years after this Nellie was born --
James was still married to Delta Tress and living in South Dakota with
younger brothers Harry and George. There are no children listed on this
census. Any information on the identity of Nellie Gililand would be
most welcome.
